“In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success.” – Proverbs 3:6
As I begin this journey to start publicly writing and expressing my thoughts to encourage people’s hearts and challenge people’s minds to be like Jesus, I cannot do it without putting God first. That’s what this blog is ultimately about, and I have a strong belief that I will be answerable for what I say and write to my creator, and it is my sole ambition to honor him in principle as taught in the Good book, to “put God first.”
think about that phrase: PUT GOD FIRST
When I think about how to put God first, I always think of what C.S. Lewis said in his book Mere Christianity about what happens to us when we first wake up in the morning. He said:
“It comes the very moment you wake up each morning. All your wishes and hopes for the day rush at you like wild animals. And the first job each morning consists simply in shoving them all back; in listening to that other voice, taking that other point of view, letting that other larger, stronger, quieter life come flowing in. And so on, all day.”
God is the other voice. God is the other point of view. God is the larger, stronger, and quieter life wanting to flow in. Putting God first is the ultimate strategy that defeats the enemy, brings the blessing, and is the best way to live our lives to the fullest potential that God plans. When we put God first, we are aligning ourselves with the very way our universe was created. We learn this from the very first verse, in the very first chapter, of the very first book of the bible. “In the Beginning… God,” or in other words “God was first,” because that’s where he belongs (Genesis 1:1). Let me share just one more of the many other examples in the bible about putting God first.
In the second story of the bible, both Cain and Abel brought offerings to God (Genesis 4:1-11). One of the main points of why Abel’s offering was accepted and why Cain’s was rejected is because Abel put God first by giving him his firstborn of his herd, whereas Cain should have brought God his first fruits of his harvest, but did not. This entire principle is seen all throughout scripture time and time again, and is the reason why I want us to begin this journey with putting God first.
I not only believe in principle that Putting God first is important, but I believe Jesus lived this way, and that it was his sole ambition of his heart and mind. He even taught it: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment” (Matthew 22:37-38). The way we begin to Love God with “all” is by putting Him first. We should always give Him our first place and be first in everything we do and think. And why not? He is God after all. But also, because He is a God who firstly expresses a pure desire for our good as His creation, and yet loves us wholly as we are now and as we will be by His grace that transforms us into his image, if we put him first.
I want to leave with 2 questions: (Comment Below)
- What is an area of life we do not put God first in?
- Name one thing you will put God first in starting today?
