“I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” – John 8:12
Life is a tough journey, and this world is a very dark place, and we can’t travel through it without the light.
I was driving back from a little secret place my family and I go to watch the sunset by the everglades here in Fort Lauderdale. The sun had set and as we got unto the highway to head home, someone began to honk their horn at me from behind.
At first, I was thinking maybe he was honking at someone else. I start to check my rear-view mirrors and see what’s going on behind me. Then I started to think maybe I had done something wrong, and maybe I wasn’t aware of it? He was still honking his horn at me.
My Response went something like this:
W h o a !
N o ?
O h .
When he flashed his lights at me, that’s when it dawned on me. He was trying to tell me that I was driving without my lights on, because it was starting to get dark and I wasn’t paying attention. I thought about that bible verse where Jesus says:
“Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.” (John 12:35)
So, I turned them on. But for a few minutes I kept thinking “why would someone care enough to let me know that I was starting to drive in the dark?”
It’s called L o v i n g Y o u r N e i g h b o r .
What this person did for me was a great display of love. He cared for my safety and ability to drive better before it even got dark. I waved to car as it passed by to thank him for caring enough about me and my family to send warning signs.
Now think about this story considering our calling to be a witness and sharing the Good News of Jesus with others. Didn’t Jesus say “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”(Matthew 5:14-16)?
This little encounter I had illustrates what evangelism is about doesn’t it? We are just people called to let other people know that they are driving without their lights on (John 11:10). Of course, it’s because we see down the road the loss and the cost of driving through life without them in the dark (John 3:19-20).
I am sure you would agree with me that Life is a tough journey, and this world is a very dark place, and we can’t travel through it without the light. I was given a simple reminder that Jesus is the light of the world. If you follow him, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.
So who are you going to honk your horn and flash your lights at that doesn’t have their lights on in your life?
Shine your lights my friends, and show the true Light of the World—Jesus.
